EQUESTRIAN TRAIL USER'S CODE OF ETHICS

We are extremely fortunate to have a network of beautiful equestrian trails. The Club Equestre has worked hard to secure rights-of-passage for its members on privately and publicly owned land. Please remember that we are guests on this land, and could lose a right-of-passage if the owner's rights are not respected. Also, please note that the number of trail users is always increasing, and everyone must do their part to ensure safety and enjoyment for all.
Anyone who rides or drives a horse on the trails must:

Respect the law
By law, only pedestrians and members of a club accredited by the City of St-Lazare and the Municipality of St-Clet can use the trails in La Pinière.
• Make sure your membership is up to date, and attach the Club's ID medallion to your tack.
• Get a day pass from the Club if you take a guest on the trails, and make sure they respect the Club rules.
• Don't be a litterbug. Take your garbage with you.
• Never take an unleashed dog on the trails; this is against town by-laws.
• Never light a fire for any purpose. If you see a fire, please report it to authorities immediately.
• Don't drink or take drugs on the trails.
• No smoking is allowed in La Piniere.

Respect the land and its owners
• Don't pick wildflowers, cut trees or otherwise damage the land or plants.
• Keep strictly to the marked trails.
• Respect landowners' privacy by staying away from their homes, outbuildings and yards.
• Respect all barriers and signs. Never cut or destroy a fence.
• Make polite inquiries before commenting on anyone's use of the land (eg, riding an ATV, cutting trees, etc.). You may be speaking to the owner, or someone authorized by the owner to do the activity.

Respect other trail users
• Make sure you stay off the trails designated for other users (ie. ATVs, snowmobiles, cross-country skiers, dog sleds).
• Be courteous and considerate to all other trail users.
• Approach pedestrians at a walk.
• Slow down when approaching other horses and keep to the right side of the trail. If you overtake other equestrians from behind, make them aware of your presence and ask if you may pass. Pass at a walk or a slow trot.

Respect safety rules
• Ride or drive in a safe, smart way, keeping control of your horse at all times. DO NOT RACE ON THE TRAILS.
• Ride in single file for passing others, and side-by-side for crossing roads.
• Be sure to have your plastic Club medallion on your tack whenever using the trails. The medallion can help to identify a loose horse and its missing rider.
• Wearing a helmet is strongly recommended as a safety measure for all trail riders.
• Make sure your tack is in good repair.
• If you witness any unsafe or illegal trail use, or any damage to the trails, please report it to the Club Equestre. Your feedback is VERY important to overall protection, patrolling and safety of our trails.
